About

In 1984, Arlene McMaster, a graduate of the Edinburgh College of Domestic Science started making celebration cakes for friends As the number of cakes grew, so did the interest in proper home-made food that wasn't full of additives and preservatives. This interest led to Arlene producing lunches for a local business on a daily basis.

In 1990, a close family friend persuaded Arlene to buy a local shop that had become available in order to extend her operation to cater for a wider range of people. The listed building still had the original cruck beam and because of its history the name 'Kuchene' (a Middle English word meaning kitchen) was chosen.

In the beginning, the shop was mainly a sandwich and salad bar with Arlene still able to produce the celebration cakes and business lunches as previously. With the extra space available, 'Kuchene' started expanding the range of homemade produce. This included a wide selection of tray bakes, apple pies, scones, meat pies and homemade salads, as well as expanding the business lunches and party catering arm of the business.

When ‘The Forge' opened ‘Kuchene’ relocated. Arlene was then joined by her son Euan, a graduate of the University of Sunderland. The business offering was extended and new products

Now, there is a comprehensive selection of jams and pickles from Cottage Delight and Mrs Bridges, Honey from Medibee Honey Farm, Troway and many more delicious snacks and nibbles.

Daily specials are on offer and gift hampers have become an absolute must as presents for special occasions.
