The history of the forge shopping centre

Steeped in history and cast in tradition, we are proud to be a part of our local heritage. Many people will know that our shopping centre’s name evolved from its conversion from a working forge. The foundry was owned by WH Butler & Sons from 1923, however buildings on this site can be traced back to 1527 when, due to its situation next to the historical church, it is believed to have had an ecclesiastical use. It is thought that the site was used for gatherings or selling ale to supplement the church’s income.

Details of the history can be found in the foyer at the back of The Forge, making for an interesting read. The displays are illustrated with pictures and sketches, showing details of all the previous uses of the site, including census information, well worth spending a few minutes of your time imagining what life used to be like at The Forge and appreciating the history that envelops your surroundings.
